GSA creates an inclusive community

Isabelle Smith, Staff

GSA is a student run club that supports LGBTQ students and allies. It’s for anyone who supports the population and focuses social interaction on support group activities.

According to the club advisor, Nora Rogers, “We are all about human rights! We’re going to make pins and raise awareness for human rights around the community. We’re going to make buttons and hopefully raise money for a charity.”

Mrs. Rogers stated that support for the club has varied over the years. “Sometimes I feel like the staff and students are super supportive of what we’re doing, and sometimes they’re not as much. A couple years ago we had a campaign to try to stop people from saying, ‘That’s so gay’, and it was very successful. The staff really helped us. We made posters, raised awareness, we spoke to the GPS students, the student council, and the staff, so that went really well. We try every year or every other year to find something we have the power to change.”

The club gets support and information from GLSEN (Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network) and Outfront Minnesota. In the past, the club has participated in all-city GSAs.

The club meets Tuesday mornings before school in Mrs. Rogers’ room 2-200.
